International Project

Cabeza de Toro, Dominican Republic

Dominican Republic Project

The rural Dominican Republic communities of Machete and Cabeza de Toro need clean water, sanitation, electricity and road improvements to stop emigration of younger people and improve the lives of current residents.  These facilities would give the towns the resources they need to thrive in the Dominican economy. A clean water supply system will be the first project implemented in our 5-year  program.

DR meetingIn 2015 our chapter visited the site twice, to assess the topography and water sources. We now have initial plans for a water system including wells, elevated water storage with a distribution network for each of the two communities. The community leaders – showing a clear desire to join in a partnership with EWB – have signed the Project Partnership Agreement and raised their 5% of the capital for the first phase (Cabeza de Toro well and storage system).
We estimate our budget for the two water distribution systems could be over $750,000. To bring down these costs, EWB members will donate design and construction engineering labor. In addition we have obtained commitments of labor and equipment from of coalition of local government (DR) agencies, non-profits, and the Peace Corps to cover more than half of our anticipated costs.
Won’t you join our coalition and donate?
